What do you think would happen if Batman were killed? Remember when Superman died? There's no way that Batman can return (let's negate the powers of the Lazarus Pit/ magic for the sake of argument)... How would Gotham respond to this?

My speculation: - His allies (Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, etc.) would all want to investigate the murder and bring the killer to justice. - The street scum would be a bit more brazen knowing that the Batman is gone. - Perhaps there would be more street vigilantes/wannabes who want to try to substitute for Batman. I suppose it would kinda be like The Reign of the Supermen. - The Joker- if not the murderer- would be devastated. He'd go on his own personal search for the killer so that he can destroy the man who took his chance away (pretty much a similar situation to the cartoon episode The Man Who Killed Batman).
The biggest thing is the identity of Batman. With Batman dead, Bruce Wayne is dead as well. Do they reveal this to the public? If Gordon prohibited anyone from unmasking the body, wouldn't people (especially investigative reporters) still make a connection between the death of Batman and the "disappearance" of Bruce Wayne? Would they try to get someone to act as Bruce Wayne to try to still cover up Batman's secret and then "fake" the death of Bruce Wayne? There are a lot of possibilities here.

Now THAT'S a storyline that (unfortunate as the situation might be), I'd be interested in reading!
Yeah, that's pretty much how I would have handled the Joker; that, plus elements of The Dark Knight Returns, where he just turns into a vegetable...
D'OH! I completely forgot about the most obvious of characters! Me'thinks that would make an excellent forked topic, though...

Possibly an opportunity to bring in the Batman from the Aronofsky script in which Bruce Wayne was living on the streets as a mechanic. He didn't have the resources that a rich Bruce Wayne would have, but he had the mindset and drive to become Batman. This would be interesting if they created another character who- driven by his own desire to fight crime and to replace Batman- uses what he can to be come his own version of Batman.
It's interesting to speculate who the other Batman wannabe characters could be.

Well, we've got:
Dick Grayson, who once took on the mantel of the Bat when Bruce needed him to.
Tim Drake; a tad too young, but in time, he may take up his mentor's guise
John Henry Irons, AKA Steel He was inspired by Batman to create a metallic batsuit in Kingdom Come... Why not have him move to Gotham and fight crime until he can no longer function?
Batwoman (Kate Kane)
Well, it would certainly give a whole new perspective on Batman's war on crime, now wouldn't it? I'm not afraid to admit that I would be interested in reading the exploits of a female Batman, especially after I read an issue of No Man's Land. In that issue, Huntress poses as Batman to make the wicked of Gotham believe that he has returned. One of the punks recognizes that he's a she, and she turns to him and says (and I'm paraphrasing here), "I mean, if you were beaten by a girl, what would you say to your buddies? That your attacker was 7 feet tall, with large ears and fangs"
