I was watching a special on the History Channel which elaborated on the global effects of the plague and climate change. Around 75 million people were killed, with the majority of those killed being of the peasantry. Crop lands went untended and woods remained absent of loggers for fuel. Over time, the older crop lands became new forests while the existing forests of Europe soaked up greater amounts of carbon dioxide. The aforementioned action cooled the planet while temperatures dropped significantly from that point onwards until the middle of the twentieth century. On another note, I believe that major reductions of pollution, being a quantifiable human-created problem, should be the ultimate goal of environmentalists and policy makers. Contrasting this is the relatively new idea of paying carbon taxes, "offsetting your carbon footprint," or buying carbon tax credits, as popularized by Oscar Award-winning Scientistâ„¢ Al Gore. Proponents of carbon taxation propose to financially tax every American simply for existing. That, and the act of people "repenting" for their "carbon sins" is an ecological and moral system equivalent to the Catholic Church's selling of indulgences. Ironically, Al Gore purchases his tax credits through the same company that he founded, Generation Investment Management, which would mean that he is in essence paying himself for living.
