Has anyone else noticed or experienced the complete freedom that comes with playing the Joker? Take Cesar Romero, for example; a suave leading man in classic Hollywood becomes an energized and gleeful criminal with the right wig, make-up and costume.

Good observation. What happened with Romero is similar to Ledger since Heath's various characters in his filmography were rather calm and reserved people. The strong and silent type. From what I've seen of The Dark Knight footage, it looks like he let loose. I can see why he said he had the most fun with that role out of his other ones.
I also remember how Nicholson was happy about playing the character. In the DVD featurette, he points out that (and I'm paraphrasing) in the past, people would have to reign him in saying, "That's enough Jack," but he was able to let loose with the Joker character.

What I think is amazing is that no matter what, it's always spot on for the character... Hell, even "The Batman" version worked with that cartoon series. To me, the Joker always works within the universe that's currently being offered (save, IMO, for the "Hush" storyline Joker)
