I have no idea what this series is about... Is anyone here a fan of this particular book and is willing to explain it to myself and others who are interested in it?

the sandman is the iconic form of dream, one of the immortals. He is a tall skinny pale man with poofy black hair [glow=Black,15,300]and speaks like this with the black bubble and the white letters [/glow] The story stars as he is captured in the early part of the century by an evil wizard who attempted to capture death for his own personal gain. What the wizard got wasnt death but he tried to get the power of eternal life anyway. eventually dream gets out, but the world was effected by his imprisonment and has got a few problems now. the first few books are of dream trying to undo the chaos caused by his adsence
By the way, he family is Death, destiny, desire, destruction, dillusion (i think i got her name wrong), and one other who i have forgotten

^ What kind of obstacles does the Sandman face? I ask this because a hero is only as great as the challanges that he opposes...

well Delirium was originally Delight and the rest of the siblings in age from oldest to youngest is Destiny, Death, Despair, Desire, and Destruction.
And some of the problems that Dream has to overcome is to retrieve the emblems of his realm, including his helmet (found in the possession of a demon in hell), his bag of magical sand (found in the possession of John Constantine's ex-girlfriend) and his ruby (found in the possession of Dr Destiny). The main plot is Dream has to either change or die and let another aspect of himself take over the Dreaming.

Those are certainly the makings of a great story In the first book, my favorite storytelling aspect was how time really did seem to pass while Dream was held captive for decades on the mortal plane.

it is awesome, isn't it? I had hopes that they would make a movie out of it, but this is one of those stories where any medium other than graphic novel might just drag the story down.
