I'm sold. Hmm, now what villain needs to have this as an origin... Another thing I realized, after making the Clayface-Mr. Freeze origin comparisons, is that the Scarecrow origin and Penguin origin are pretty similar, too- two odd-looking boys grow up being laughed at for their appearances and called the very names that they will adopt as criminals. Both begin as criminals by committing crimes against those who picked on them. Perhaps there could be a little more, through retconning, to separate them, though I do love the anti-bully sentiment that they represent... What about the Penguin being born wealthy but lacking any warmth or kindness? "I'm glad he's dressed in a tux; he's so cold that you'd have to be a penguin to survive around him." He could still sport his "fine, Roman nose" but continue to have his attire. I'd have Crane be picked on in school, but not have that as the primary motivation. Instead, I see him more or less as a mirror to Batman; however, Batman uses fear in the service of good, while Crane would use fear to dominate others.

This reminds me of what Dan DiDio said on Batman Unmasked- that Penguin is a representation of bureaucracy gone wrong. Kind of if Bruce Wayne misused his wealth. I imagine that could also apply to characters like Lex Luthor and Roman Sionis. By the way, the latest issue of The Joker's Asylum covers an interesting Penguin origin. I've read online scans of it and it's an interesting take: www.batman-on-film.com/comics_review_jokers-asylum2_7-17-08.htmlYeah, I imagine that Crane and Cobblepot weren't too popular in school and, as a result, felt the need to dominate others in society.

Thanks for posting that info from Joker's Asylum; I wasn't sure if the series would be any good, but it definitely sounds interesting
